Education is compulsory in Belgium between the ages of 6 and 18.

The system is organized into four levels:

• Pre-primary education (2.5 to 6 year-old)
• Primary education (6 to 12 year-old)
• Secondary education (12 to 18 year-old)
• Higher education (18 to 25 year-old or more)

In the school year 2007-2008, more than 134,000 students were registered across the 15 universities of the country and another 187,000 followed higher education.
